XX Semana de Cine Fantástico y de Terror de San Sebastián



San Sebastían continues to earn its reputation as a city of film with the twentieth annual Horror Film Festival.
It ends today with the closing ceremonies and awards. The film "Lesbian Vampire Killers (really? the title alone scares me) won the public award. Today the closing film is "RoboGeisha".
The festival began a week ago on Halloween night. "Vertige", a french film, opened the festival in the Teatro Principal, decorated especially for the occasion.



Donostia sigue ganandose la reputación de ciudad de cine con su XX Festival de Cine Fantástico y de Terror.
Cierra hoy la festival con la clausura y los premios. El premio público se ganó la pelicula "Lesbian Vampire Killers" (en serio? Solo el título me da miedo). Hoy la última pelicula mostrada es "RoboGehisa".
El festival empezó la noche de Halloween, hace una semana. La pelicula francés "Vertige" inauguró el festival en el teatro Principal, con su fachada decorada.

movie spotlight:



Today's movie spotlight is on Hadewijch, a Canadian film directed by Bruno Dumont.

This is a story of a young girl, Hadewijch, who gets expelled from the convent she is studying in.
Hadewijch is named after a 13th century mystic and poet, associated with the beguine movement. This movement originated with women who lived alone, devoting their lives to faith and taking care of others, without taking any official vows. These women created a community as a form of protection, unknowingly forming the first group of the beguine movement.
After being removed, she goes back to being Celine, and this is where her story picks up, taking her to the Middle East in a sort of allegorical exploration of Christianity and Islam.

The final screening is today in the Antiguo Berri theatre at 4pm.




La película de hoy es Hadewijch, una película canadiense dirigida por Bruno Dumont.

Esta es una historia de una joven, Hadewijch, que es expulsado del convento en que estudia.
Hadewijch es el nombre de una místico y poeta del siglo 13, asociado con el movimiento de las beguinas. Este movimiento se originó con las mujeres que vivían solas, dedicando su vida a la fe y el cuidado de los demás, sin tener ningún funcionario votos. Estas mujeres crearon una comunidad como una forma de protección, y sin saberlo, forman el primer grupo del movimiento de las beguinas.
Después de dejar el convento, ella es Celine, y aquí es donde recoge su historia, llevándola a Oriente Medio en una especie de exploración alegórica del cristianismo y el Islam.

La final vez de verla es hoy en el Teatro Antiguo Berri a las 1600.

note: I consider Making Plans for Lena to be a given, as I love Christophe Honoré, and therefore I exempted it from the list as a movie that demands to be seen.

3d in the velodrome



Today the Antonio Elorza Velodrome will become a movie theatre. Toy Story 3D will be screened at 5 p.m. and Battle for Terra 3D plays at 8:30 pm. The screen will be bigger than any most people have seen, at 400 m squared.

At the end of the week, there are activities for adults, too. The Closing Gala will be broadcast live, along with the closing films of the Official Selection and Zabaltegi Pearls. Finally, there will be a movie every morning for the young people of Donostia.



Hoy se convierte el Velodrómo Antonio Elorza en teatro de cine. Se puede ver Toy Story 3D a las 17:00 y Battle for Terra 3D a las 20:30. La pantalla será la más grande que han visto mucha gente, con un tamaño de 400 m X 400 m.

Al fin de la semana, hay actividades para los adultos, también. Ofrecerá la sesión clausura, como siempre, que consiste de la retrasmision de la Gala de Clausura y las clausuras de la Sección Official y Zabaltegi Pearls. Y finalmente, hará una peli cada mañana para los jovenes de donostia.

Por fin ha llegado el primer día!

Es cliché de tomar Brad Pitt muy de pecho. Pero es tan dificil de no hacerlo...

Enfrente de un fondo de rayas verdes, rojas y blancas, Zinemaldia 2009 levantó el telón con los actores Bárbara Goenaga y Francis Lorenzo, y la periodista Edurne Ormazabal como maestros de ceremonias.

Llovía! Mucho! Incesantamente! Y no podía resister poner otra foto de este hombre.

Sería más....pero mañana cogo un vuelo transatlántico para tomar parte en el festival!

tickets se van rápidamente



This view will be at a premium during Zinemaldia.
Tickets for several of the showings at the beautiful Victoria Eugenia theatre are no longer available, after just one day of ticket sales. These sold out showings include Chloe, Yuki & Nina, Taking Woodstock and Green Days.

Even more distressing is the fact that three movies sold entirely out of tickets in SEVEN MINUTES: Inglourious Basterds, Whatever Works and Precious--see you back in America. This is partially because the movies in the Official Selection get more seats than those in Zabaltegi, so don't panic.

Also close to selling out are Das Weisse Band, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus and Sin nombre. This worries me; last year a few screenings were sold out by midweek, but it was still possible to see the majority of the movies until the day of. Perhaps the crisis has everyone just a little more prudent this year abou everything, including pre-purchasing film festival tickets...



Esta vista va a escasear durante Zinemaldia.
Entradas de algunas proyecciones en la hermosa Victoria Eugenia ya no están disponibles, y eso después de solo un día de ventas. Estas proyecciones cerradas incluyen span style="font-weight:bold;">Chloe, Yuki & Nina, Taking Woodstock
y Green Days.

Aún más inquietante es el hecho de que tres películas se han agotado en siete minutos:
Inglourious Basterds, Whatever Works y Precious--pues que las veo de volver a los EEUU. Esto es en parte porque las películas en la Sección Oficial obtener más escaños que los que en Zabaltegi, por lo que no cunda el pánico.

Más que están al punto de acabar son Das Weisse Band, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus y Sin nombre. Me preocupa; el año pasado habían algunas proyecciones agotadas a mediados de semana, pero quedó posible de ver la mayoría hasta el día de la proyección. Tal vez la crisis tiene a todos un poco más prudente de todo este año, incluyendo pre-compra de entradas festival de cine....

Euskal Zine - Euskal Herria

The day of Basque cinema is a standby for the festival, and this year the same holds true. However, the section has expanded and will stretch through the entire week. Zinemira will be an opportunity for everyone to view the latest in cinema from this tiny yet culturally rich corner of the world.
But.
This year's Zinemaldia will also feature a film produced by San Sebastianite Koldo Zuazua in the Official Selection. In Zabaltegi, Zorion Perfektua is a wholly Basque film from director Jabi Elortegi. And last but not least, Ori includes some Vitorian production.

El día de cine vasco es una parte integral del festival, este año como siempre. Sin embargo, la sección ha aumentado y durará la semana entera. Zinemira da la oportunidad a todos de ver lo último de cine y la riqueza cultural de este pequeñito parte del mundo.

La Zinemaldia de este año también estreña una peli que se produció por donostiarra Koldo Zuazua en la Sección Oficial. In Zabaltegi, Zorion Perfektua es una pelicula vasca del director Jabi Elortegi. Y por último y no de menos importancia, Ori , que cuenta con la producción vitoriana.

the donostia award



You may know him as Gandalf.
But that's only because you're not a sophisticated English theatregoer.

This week, Sir Ian McKellen will take his place in a line of very distinguished actors when he receives the Donostia award at Zinemaldia. Woody Allen, Meryl Streep, Al Pacino...the list of previous winners is endlessly illustrious. The last English actor to receive the award was Bob Hoskins, in 2002.

McKellen's acting credits are heavily weighted with Shakespearean theatre roles. He began his theatre career at Cambridge as a bright young thing. He is an actor's actor, with a distinguished film career that snuck its way between over 250 staged plays. Patrick Stewart, a fellow UK citizen and X-Men costar, has said, "I remember seeing him as Claudio in Much Ado About Nothing and thinking he was dazzling. I was still struggling along with small parts and understudying when Ian was establishing himself as a leading man."

Sir McKellen has also used his position of influence to lobby for gay rights. In a typically modest, knightly manner, he says, " I just happen to have a public profile which gives my views more importance than they deserve."

Es actor de actores, con una carrera de cine muy distinguida casi escondida entre las 250 obras de teatro. Patrick Stewart, un compatriota de Inglaterra y coprotagonista de X-Men, ha dicho, "Recuerdo verle como Claudio en Mucho ruido y pocas nueces y pensando que era brillante. Ya estaba yo luchando con papeles pequeños y suplentes cuando Ian se estableció como protagonista."

Sir McKellen aprovecha de su posición para ejercer influencia para derechos gays. En su estilo típico y modesto, dice, "Da la casualidad que tengo un perfil muy público lo cual da más valor a mis opinions que merecen."

honoré returns with 'making plans for lena'


Christophe Honoré will be back in San Sebastian this year, with his entourage in tow, including his perennial leading man, Louis Garrel, and his brother Julien.

Honoré's 2009 offering is Making Plans for Lena (originally Non ma fille, tu n'iras pas danser), starring Chiara Mastroianni, Marie-Christine Barrault and Jean-Marc Barr. The premise is a newly-single mother trying to make it through life's obstacles, one of which happens to be her own overly helpful family.

Last year's La belle personne was a festival favorite; I saw it in the packed Victoria Eugenia theatre. Honoré has said he considers it part of a loose Parisian trilogy, along with Dans Paris and Les chansons d'amor. This year's film, however, seems to swing back into the realm of the adult, perhaps in the vein of I've Loved You So Long.

So what can we expect from Honoré's latest? Let's take a look at the Honoré Commandments (taken from various interviews) for a little crystal ball action:

-He is moved by juxtapositions of joyous liberty and tragedy
-He thinks Wes Anderson is the best American director
-He is wary of screenplays that put things on a grid
-He thinks people at ease in their bodies are boring
-He does NOT want to teach you anything
-He is an unabashed fan of Godard, which takes guts in a business where comparisons can kill a career.


Christophe Honoré volverá a San Sebastian este año, con su séquito a cuestas, incluso su protagonista perpetuo, Louis Garrel, y su hermano Julien.

La ofrenda actual de Honoré es Making Plans for Lena (originally Non ma fille, tu n'iras pas danser), protagonizada por Chiara Mastroianni, Marie-Christine Barrault y Jean-Marc Barr. La premisa es una madre soltera que se enfrenta a todo que la vida le da, aunque la parte más difícil es su familia de do-gooders.

La belle personne, del último año, fue un favorito de la festival. Yo la ví en el llenísimo teatro Victoria Eugenia. Honoré ha dicho que la considera parte de una trilogía parisienne, con Dans Paris y Les chansons d'amour. La peli de este año se queda en el mundo más adulto, quizás parecido a I've Loved You So Long, un filme francés premiado.

Entonces, que esperamos de lo último de Honoré? Miramos a los Mandamientos de Honoré (tomado desde entrevistas) para jugar la bola de cristál:
-Él se mueve por la yuxtaposición de la libertad de alegría y la tragedia
-Él piensa que Wes Anderson es el mejor director de América
-Se desconfía de guiones que poner las cosas en una rejilla
-Piensa que la gente a gusto en sus cuerpos son aburridos
-Él no quiere enseñar nada
-Él es un fan descarado de Godard, que tiene agallas en un negocio donde las comparaciones se puede matar a una carrera.

official selection announced



The movies competing in the Official Selection for Zinemaldia have been released. Fifteen movies will be in competition for the Concha de Oro, with Mother and Child(out of competition) closing the festival, and El Baile De Victoria also showing out of competition. The list is an impressive conglomeration of Spanish, French, US, Asian, Australian, and Latin American films. Many of the directors already have plenty of bling weighing down their mantles, so competition will be stiff. Here's a complete list of the films:

top zabaltegi picks


With a large portion of Zabaltegi selections revealed, I think it's time to start getting excited....


THE MUST SEE
My top pick for this year's selection is Whatever Works, the new Woody Allen feature. I know, I know...who could be a safer bet than Woody? But I've absolutely loved all of his recent European productions, so I can't wait to see the genius Larry David star in his latest.

THE MUST FOR SOCIAL COMMENTARY
Un Propheté will also be one of the movies whose ticket I buy upon landing. This movie, filmed mostly in France, won this year's Grand Jury Prize at Cannes. Reviewers far and wide praise it as a sort of thrilling, prison-based version of Entre Les Murs.

THE MUST SEE AND POSSIBLY BE LET DOWN BY
The film that seems most irresistible is Limits of Control. What's not to love? Set in Spain, drinking coffee, mysterious information being collected, and check out the credits...Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Gael Garcia Bernal, and, oh, Jim Jarmusch. With Jarmusch, you never know what you're going to get, and often the best concepts lose a little of their luster, perhaps from a lack of narrative and an emphasis on conceit. Will this movie be any different? It's getting reviews on the extreme ends of the spectrum, being labeled both his worst and his best effort to date. We'll have to see.

THE MUST TALK ABOUT
One movie that I will eventually see, even if it's not at the festival, is Precious. This movie is based on the book Push, which I read and wrote about here a couple of years ago. It's a deeply moving story about an African-American girl with all the odds stacked against her. It will be fascinating to see how the international audience responds to a film that, I feel, deals with some uniquely American issues.

THE MUST SEE
Mi favorito de la seleccion de este año es Whatever Works, lo nuevo de Woody Allen. Lo sé, lo sé... quien será una apuesta más segura? Pero sus peliculas recientes me han gustado muchisimo, así que no puedo esperar para ver el genio de Larry David en su última.

Un Propheté también será una de los billetes que compro al salir de la avión. Esta película, filmada principalmente en Francia, ganó este año el Gran Premio del Jurado en Cannes. Los críticos a lo largo y ancho la alabanza como una Entre Les Murs del carcel, pero más emocionante.

THE MUST SEE Y POSIBLEMENTE SER DESILUSIONADO POR
La película que parece más irresistible es Límites de Control. Todo se debe amar, no? Situado en España, café después de café, información misteriosa que se recogerá, y mira a los créditos ... Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, Gael García Bernal, y, oh, Jim Jarmusch. Con Jarmusch, nunca se sabe lo que vamos a conseguir y, a menudo, los mejores conceptos pierden un poco de su brillo, tal vez de una falta de narrativa y un énfasis en el concepto. Será distinta esta pelicula? Ha recibido comentarios sobre la extrema extremos del espectro, llamado su peor y su mejor esfuerzo hasta la fecha. Vamos a ver.


THE MUST PARA HABLAR
Una película que voy a ver, aunque quizás no en el festival, es Precious. Esta película está basada en el libro Push, que he leído y de que he escribido aquí hace dos años. Es una conmovedora historia sobre una niña afro-americana con pocas probabilidades de exito. Será fascinante ver cómo la audiencia internacional responde a una película que, en mi opinión, se trata de algunas cuestiones únicas de los EEUU.

quentin-may we have this dance?




The opener of Zabaltegi has been announced...and it's Quentin Tarantino!
Zabaltegi-Pearls is the section designed for movies that have shown at other international festivals but not yet in Spain.
Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds, will open the Zabaltegi Pearls section of the festival on Friday. We can only hope that a) Brad Pitt will be in attendance and b) Quentin will do the same little dance he did at Cannes!

how to become a film festival director


Directing a film festival-a dream job, right? Maybe, if you take out the incredible stress during the event and the pressure to succeed throughout the entire year, not to mention the sheer difficulty of organizing hundreds of thousands of participants. And it's not the most straightforward job to procure.

Mikel Olaciregui is the director of Zinemaldia, and he is proof that there is no direct route to the top of an international film festival. Olaciregui already had a plum job as producer for an ETB news program, which necessitated contact with the festival's board of directors. In 1993, this lead to a job as assistant director of the festival. Only after plugging away for 8 years was he promoted to the coveted spot of director.

The story is similar everywhere you look:
John Biaggi, Human Rights Watch International Film Festival: Started as a filmmaker, made a couple indie films, then took a job as programmer at Human Rights Watch and worked his way up.
Rebecca Yeldham, Los Angeles Film Festival: Worked as a producer, festival programmer, and in acquisitions before becoming festival director.
Dan Krovich, Atlanta Film Festival: Got degrees in chemistry and PHD in pharmacology, broke into the industry as programming administrator at the Maryland film festival, worked on film productions, and was on the programming committee for the underground film festival MicroCineFest before becoming director.
And so on.

Directing a festival is a year-round job. Olaciregui says the team takes a break after the festival but reconvenes in October to begin plans for the following year. In an interview, Olaciregui says he believes in the power of teamwork to get things done. A director, however, must bring "a personal approach in attracting the industry by speaking to them after the event to see how successful they were in promoting their films, and encouraging them to return."

And, perhaps the most important quality in a future festival director is, well, not to expect to be a festival director: "Never in my wildest dreams...I never would have thought about working for the festival, much less directing it."



Ser director de un festival de cine-un sueño de trabajo, verdad? Tal vez, si se quitan el estrés del evento y la presión para tener exito que se siente durante todo el año, y no digamos ya la enorme dificultad de la organización de cientos de miles de participantes. Y no es el trabajo más fácil de conseguir.

Mikel Olaciregui es el director de Zinemaldia, y él es prueba de que no hay una ruta directa a la cima de un festival internacional de cine. Olaciregui ya tenía buen trabajo en el Departamento de Producción de ETB, lo que se le ponía en contacto con
la gente importante del festival. En 1993, sacó trabajo como Gerente y en 1999 fue nombrado Subdirector.

Una historia semejante en todas partes:

Dan Krovich, Atlanta Film Festival:¿Tiene títulos en química y doctor en farmacología, irrumpió en la industria como en la programación administratro Maryland festival de cine, trabajó en producciones cinematográficas , y ha sido en el comité de programación para el festival de cine subterráneo MicroCineFest antes de convertirse en director.
Y etcétera.

Dirigir un festival es un trabajo sin vacaciónes. Olaciregui dice que el equipo toma un descanso después de la fiesta, pero vuelva a reunir en octubre para empezar de nuevo. En una entrevista Olaciregui dice que cree en el poder del equipo a hacer las cosas. Un director, sin embargo, debe aportar "un enfoque personal en la atracción de la industria por hablar con ellos después del evento para ver el éxito que tenían en la promoción de sus películas, y para alentarlos a regresar."

Y, tal vez la cualidad más importante en un futuro director del festival es, pues, no esperar a ser director de un festival:"Nunca, ni tan siquiera en mis mejores sueños...Nunca había pensado en trabajar en el Festival, y mucho menos en dirigirlo."

the newest Almodovar...Zabaltegi?



Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Embraces) is rumored to be part of the selecion at Zinemaldia this year. The film, Pedro Almodovar's newest, premiered in March in Spain, to mostly positive reviews.
Almodovar's movies all bear the mark of a common creator, which is perhaps one of the best indicators of a lasting film legend. Almodovar's sheer elegance, his obsession with women, and his use of flashback as narrative technique all contribute to his individuality.
The new movie showed at Cannes this year, and was duly praised, leaving ornery critics with nothing to do besides ask if maybe this isn't his best. But they don't seem too sure of that.
The storyline is a typically Almodovarian tangle of past, present, love, hate, and family. A blind, elderly film director narrates his past to an assistant, whose mother appears in his past life, along with an aspiring actress (Penelope Cruz).

Se rumorea que Los Abrazo Rotos sería parte de la selección de Zinemaldia. La pelicula más reciente de Pedro Almodovar estrenó en Marzo, con una mayoria de críticas positivas.

Todas las películas de Almodovar llevan la marca de un solo creador, lo cual puede ser uno de los mejores indicadores de una leyenda duradero de cine. La elegancia de Almodovar, su obsesión con la mujer, y su uso de flashback como técnica narrativa contribuyen a su individualidad.

La pelicula se mostró en Cannes este año, y fue debidamente alabado, dejando críticos sin nada que hacer, además de preguntar si tal vez este no es su mejor. Pero me parece que no pueden convencer a sí mismos.

La historia es típica de Almodovar- una maraña del pasado, el presente, el amor, el odio, y la familia. Un director de cine anciano y ciego narra su pasado a un asistente, cuya madre aparece en su vida pasada, junto con una aspirante a actriz (Penélope Cruz).

the man behind the poster


This year's poster is a graphic, seemingly simple piece, designed by Óscar Mariné Brandi. He owns a design firm out of Madrid, and he is well known for his branding work with Camper, Loewe, and Absolut Vodka. Communication is a key part of his design thought process, uniting content and context. And making it look really, really good.



You name it, he's done it: posters for Pedro Almodovar, layouts for El País, branding for cultural centers, everything! All his designs bear his fingerprint, a bare and unapologetically hip purposefulness with a tiny pinch of play.
Óscar Mariné and his design group also designed last year's set of posters for the festival.





At this point, I actually prefer last year's main poster. In an interview in Diario Vasco, Mariné says, "The posters have to be polemic...Last year's was polemic because there was pink, because there was wood." And the poster did seem to invoke a little controversy, with the references to Basque culture settled starkly against a very modern color and design sensibility.
This year's, he says, "can please many people because it has many colors and each one can be seen reflected in another." Meh. A bit freshman art school (the explanation, not the design). He goes on, "It's a potent, very clear poster with a very direct, positive message. That before the [economic] crisis, we have to have the attitude of lending a hand and pushing."

backwash: considering french cinema




One of the retrospectives featured this year at the festival is "Backwash: The Cutting Edge of French Cinema". It features French films from the past decade and seems to aspire to attain an understanding of where French cinema currently resides. The Nouvelle Vague (French New Wave...Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer...) still influences cinema today, and the festival organizers have employed a surfing metaphor to structure dialogue--the official site says Backwash will look "at the currents inherited from the undertow of the Nouvelle Vague in the 60s...a creative drift currently gaining strength and encompassing a wide spectrum of genres."

The list of films included is eclectic, to say the least. From horror to realism, hardly a genre is missing. What is missing is in fact the most interesting part of the list. Amelie? I mean, I know we've all seen it, but as a piece of this decade's French cinema, I would say it's pretty significant. What about The Diving Bell and The Butterfly? I'm not sure what exactly informed the selection of films, but the gaping holes are a bit curious.

The concept, however, is fascinating, if perhaps a bit broad. Will a retrospective whose focus includes the cinematic output of an entire country really succeed in showing us something of value? Maybe not. Maybe all we will get is a lovely collection of slow-moving, philosophical French films. Not too shabby. But maybe it will. Maybe in those tiny bars, with the clinking of coffee cups and yelling waiters, some of us will be able to make sense of the shifting tides of the creators of cinema. Maybe it will clear a space for a discussion harking back to the days of Cahiers du Cinéma, where collaboration and the mixing of ideas created a deeper understanding of what movies were, and what they could be.

the recession hits here...

If you haven't heard, Spain is feeling the recessionary waves particularly hard. The beaches of San Sebastian aren't immune to the lapping of turning tides, either- this year's festival will be one day shorter than is normal. There will also be one less retrospective in the 57th incarnation of Zinemaldia.
The Diario Vasco quotes the director of the festival, Mikel Olaciregui, as saying "It will not affect the intensity and the variety of the offerings. We can't evade the crisis in which we are living, and discretion regarding spending is more advisable than ever." He goes on to promise that the adjustments will be made to minimize their effect on the festival. Whatever that means.
The actual numbers show that the festival is out 800,000 euros compared to last year. The cutting of one day and the scrapping of the Richard Brooks retrospective are reportedly the most drastic measures that will be taken.

Welcome to the grand opening of an unofficial guide to the San Sebastian International Film Festival, aka Donostia Zinemaldia.
Let's start with the big picture, so we're all on the same page.
San Sebastian is in northern Spain. It is in what we call Basque Country, what Spaniards call País Vasco, and what Basques call Euskal Herria. Incidentally, San Sebastian's true name is Donostia.
This year marks the 57th Donostia Zinemaldia, an incredible gathering of celebrities, unknowns, good films, bad films, and everything in between. Of course, this kind of thing happens all over the world. Not every film festival, however, takes place in between the belle epoque beaches and rolling green hills of Donostia.
This year's festival promises to be just as amazing as the previous ones...I will be here to bring the latest to you.
